High Resolution Weather Forecasting

RWDI provides weather data to organizations and government agencies that need access to high resolution weather data.

Need access to high resolution weather data?

RWDI has been performing meteorological assessments and high resolution numerical weather predictions for a number of years in support of air quality and wind engineering applications around the world. We have the ability to perform custom weather forecasting, hind casting or down casting at high spatial and temporal resolutions for locations throughout the world using our in-house supercomputing facilities and weather forecast models (MM5 and WRF).

Some of our past projects include:

Company Project Resolution
Alberta Environment Used MM5 to generate a 5 year meteorological data set for regulatory applications. 12 km
Saudi Aramco Used MM5 to generate a 3 year meteorological data set 4 km
Masdar City Used MM5 to generate a 1 year meteorological data set 1.33 km
AGIP Oil Company Used WRF to generate 3 month data set over the Caspian Sea for CMAQ modelling 4 km
In-house Used WRF to generate 5-10 year data sets for the Middle East, China and India to support Wind Engineering applications. 12 km with 4 km sub-domains

Need access to high resolution operational weather forecasts?

RWDI runs a high resolution weather forecast system using WRF at its data center in Calgary. The forecast system currently provides a 48-hour forecast for Alberta and British Columbia at 4km resolution and is updated every six hours, four times a day. In addition, forecast data is available every 6 hours for a smaller domain centered on Calgary at a 2km spatial resolution.

Who can benefit from this data?

  • governments who need access to meteorological data sets for climate change and regulatory modelling;
  • companies with operational requirements that depend on high resolution weather forecasts;
  • air quality consulting companies; and,
  • architecture companies.
